The Global Epidemic of Diabetes

This is month is American Diabetes Month but also this month is World Diabetes Day.  World Diabetes Day was being held on November 14th, 2009 .  Alot of people do not know that this day existed.  This day is very important because diabetes is not just an American Diabetes problem but a world wide problem.

It is predicted in 2025  – 380 million people worldwide will be diagnosed with diabetes.  It is interesting to note that the highest rate of diabetes is found in India at 40.9 million followed by China with 39.8 million and not in the United States with 21 million.  (You need to check this number per capita since there are so many more people in China and in India – I think we lead per capita.)  Sadly, the global spending for diabetes care is less than 15%.  The global diabetes epidemic treatment and prevention will cost at least 232 billion USD.  By 2025, the cost is likely to exceed 302.5 billion USD.  Website:  www.idf.org ( Click here for full Article )

On this month it is important to have people to become aware about diabetes.  One way to do this is by becoming involved in World Diabetes Day on November 14th, 2009.  The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public spotlight.  Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013.  The campaign slogan for 2009 is “Understand Diabetes and Take Control”.
