FNCE 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia

It is that time again with FNCE 2014 (Food Nutrition Conference and Expo) from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  Since this year it is in Atlanta, Georgia, I knew that I needed to come to this incredible conference!  Being a Secretary of NOBIDAN (National Organization of Blacks in Dietetics and Nutrition) – website- which is part of the Member Interest Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND.  I had the chance to participated in alot of events that were associated with NOBIDAN.  This year was a historical year because the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has appointed their first African American President-Elect!  Dr. Evelyn Crayton, Ed, RD, LD, FAND who is also a NOBIDAN member was elected this past February 2014 and will start her term on June 1st, 2015.  I had a chance to speak with her and it was such a honor to meet with her!

This year FNCE there were so many things going on and the speakers were excellent!  One of the speakers that I had enjoyed was Adam Keek who is a Olympic Rower and he explains about using the art of rowing with high performance.  One of the things that he explained about is his disciplines of leadership is to stay focused.  It is not easy to stay focus on a goal let alone training for the Olympics.  He explained how he was able to focus by using the Breakthrough Theory.  For the first 4-5 years you maybe in limbo but with effort time you realize that you need a break through and pretty soon what was hard to do becomes familiar.

Another thing that Adam discussed about is Eat Well = Be Well.  When you eat well then this will result in your body, mind and spirit in becoming a healthy.  Like the old saying goes “You are what you eat!”

The last thing that was important to me from what Adam said on the Disciplines for Leadership is finding a mentor.  That is so important to find someone who has

I really appreciate Mr. Adam Keek speech particularly him closing out this incredible and exciting conference!  His message came at the right time!

Next year FNCE is going to be at Nashville, TN and I can not wait what is going to happen there!  Hope to see you there!

Women in Government Conference in St. Louis, MO

I was so honored to speak at this conference.  My speech was on Malnutrition which was sponsored by Abbott Nutrition. (Click Press Release for HEPSA Living Healthy – Denine Rogers RDN – Speaker at Women in Government Conference for further information about my speech).

Before the conference began, I wanted to take some time to see the sites of St. Louis!  The first place I stop was to a very famous Soul Food Restaurant called Sweetie Pies.  If you are a fan of OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) then you probably will recognize the show “Sweetie Pies” with Ms. Robbie and Montgomery Family.  Well, I knew that since I was in St. Louis , I was not going to leave until I stop by there for meal.

I hitch a cab ride to the new Sweetie Pies at the Upper Crust at around 4:00 pm and I was in shock that there were no lines.  On the show you always see the long lines of people fighting to get into the restaurant.  One of the waiters told me that during the late afternoon is the best time since the lunch crowd was gone.

I was hoping to meet Ms. Robbie but I was told that she was unfortunately not there.

I did had a chance to meet with her lovely sisters Jan and Linda.  They were both so nice and very friendly.  They are truly appreciative of everyone who is a fan to the television show.  I was looking forward to have some fish but unfortunately fish is only made on Fridays.  (I was there on Thursday).  I did enjoyed my vegetarian plate and i made sure I took as many pictures of Sweetie Pies as possible.

This was not the only thing I did on my one day trip to St. Louis.  Next week I will discuss about my adventure at the famous landmark in St. Louis – The Gateway Arch!  Happy Labor Day!

Eat in Houston Texas!

As I have previously talk about that I was in Houston, Texas for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Conference and I had the chance to catch up with new and old friends.  Of course during all of those gatherings we had a chance to chow down and taste some interesting and some good foods.  First I had the chance to eat at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Houston.  I have never been to any Four Seasons Hotel but all I ever heard about this hotel was luxury and top notch service.  In the Four Seasons Hotel is the Quattro restaurant where the have the best Sunday Brunch in town.

The Four Seasons Hotel restaurant – Quattro  means four in Italian – represents the four “faces” of the restaurant: breakfast, lunch, dinner and a lively antipasto bar.  Boy it was so taste of the food was extremely delicious.  I had the  Seared Sustainable Verlasso salmon, truffle mashed potatoes, Houston “Sutton Sweet” tomato relish, caper salmoriglio which was excellent!  Our waiter was incredible and so entertaining and funny!  So whenever you are in Houston, Texas and you want some great delicious food then go to the Four Season Hotel.

The next day I had a chance to visit the Epicurean Express Supermarket in Downtown Houston.  This store sells gourmet grocery food items at discount prices.  I love the selections of food items that they had and I wish they had one here in Atlanta.  Here are some pictures below of this wonderful supermarket:

I also had a chance to eat at Massa’s Seafood Grill which i was extremely happy to eat there.  I ate an appetizer which was Crab Cakes – Topped with Lemon Butter Sauce and Tomato Relish  and while one of my friend had the Chicken Caesar salad.  I love the flavor and taste of the crab cakes and the crab was real crab meat!  I will definitely come back to this restaurant again!

I then went to a Tapas restaurant with some friends in the evening time and this was the first time I have ever been to one.  I have not been a great fan of Tapas Restaurants because of the meals being made with alots of beef and beef products.  I am a semi-vegetarian and I was not use to eating the food selection that was there at the restaurant.  My friends love the food but unfortunately i could not get into eating it.  I do love the sharing the food concept but the food at this restaurant was not my cup of tea.  Here are some of the pictures of the food at the Tapas Restaurant below:

So it is great to try something new and be open to it.  This week try to eat something that you have never eaten before.  I will definitely continue to do this especially when I go away.  For more food ideas particularly for the holiday season check out by friend Renee Simpson blog called .
